APPOINTMENT

The appointment will be whole time. Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues. The appointment is substantive post on a permanent basis. The successful candidate will join the existing multi-disciplinary team. They will provide clinical care to both Trauma and Elective patients and will support, train and supervise other clinical and allied health staff in the Department. Clinical sessions may include fixed and flexible sessions both in the out-patient department and the operating theatre. Some sessions may take place in the community hospitals. There may be the opportunity to increase both direct clinic care and supporting professional activity sessions depending on the needs of the Department. The post-holder will contribute to national and regional audits including the National Joint Registry. As an acute teaching hospital trust, teaching is provided to undergraduates, postgraduates and allied health professionals. These require mentoring and regular assessments to allow them to complete their training portfolios. A weekly post-graduate Trauma & Orthopaedic teaching programme takes place on a Friday afternoon. It is possible that clinical, teaching and managerial work may take place at the other hospital sites. The post holder will be responsible for keeping up to date with patient and non-patient related administration. Appropriate secretarial and administrative support and office accommodation will be available. There is a mentorship scheme for all new consultant staff, this is designed to help and assist new appointees to settle into working at UHL as easily as possible. It will assist individuals in a personal way to familiarise them with the Trust and how things work in practice.

BASE

Your normal place of work will be as discussed at interview and will be confirmed in Section 1 of your contract but you may be required to work in other locations of the Trust.

MAIN DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The main duties of the role will be the provision of Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery to the people of the region. The post is suitable for an individual with comprehensive clinical experience of Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery with particular experience in knee and revision knee arthroplasty to support Leicesters development as a revision arthroplasty region hub. It is not anticipated that the post will include a soft tissue knee component. The post will have a split Trauma commitment with contribution to the 1 in 20 on-call rota for general trauma. The post-holder will be on the specialist register or within 6 month of a CCT/CESR in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

The job has been created to help meet the needs of the Department and to accommodate job plan changes. Successful candidates will be expected to undertake audit, mandatory training and teaching of junior doctors and allied health professionals.

PRINCIPAL ELEMENTS OF THE POST

Elective

• To provide elective orthopaedic surgery including primary knee and revision knee arthroplasty

Trauma

• To provide general trauma care and contribute to the 1 in 20 on-call rota.
• To provide specialist Knee Trauma care for distal femoral and tibial plateau fractures.
• To provide specialist care for acute Prosthetic Joint Infections
• To provide care for sub-specialist peri-prosthetic fracture management including distal femoral replacement surgery

Leadership

• To support and take joint responsibility for the clinical work of other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• To provide continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and for the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice.

Education and Staffing

• To supervise and teach undergraduates
• To supervise and train postgraduate doctors, both training and non-training grades, across all levels.
• To supervise, support and enable the development of an alternate medical workforce including specialist nurses, physiotherapists and Physician Assistants.
• To participate in assessments and recruitment at local and national levels.

Clinical Effectiveness and Risk Management

• To ensure that clinical practice is evidence based, effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place by actively participating in audit.
• To work with the CMG management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match.
• To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported in a timely manner.
• To undertake mandatory & statutory training as determined by the Trust and the CMG.
• To commit to IT development and other systems that seek to improve efficiency

Public engagement

• To commit to modern approaches for patient education, patient communications and patient engagement.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Undergraduate medical degree FRCS (Tr&Orth) or equivalent CCT/CESR in Trauma & Orthopaedics (or within 6 months of Interview)

Desirable

• Related MSc, MD or other higher degree Education qualification

Experience

Essential

• Considerable clinical experience in general Trauma & Orthopaedics Experience of NHS working Experience in Knee and Revision Knee Arthroplasty Experience in general Trauma Experience and exposure to Specialist knee Trauma Experience and exposure to Acute Prosthetic Joint Infections Experience an exposure to peri-prosthetic fracture management including distal femoral replacement surgery
